Vale, vamos a por ello, resulta que al extranjero siempre se exportan muchos estereotipos sobre nuestra cultura y nuestra forma de ser (bueno como pasa con toda cultura que siempre tendemos a generalizar) y yo quiero en esta entrada daros a conocer, para los que no lo sepáis ya, cuales son esos estereotipos y si yo los creo acertados o no.
Okay, let's do this, apparently it is common to export a lot of stereotypes about the Spanish culture and our behavior (well, in fact that's what happens with all the cultures because we all tend to generalize) and with this post I want to let you know, for those who don't know yet, which are these stereotypes and if I think they are correct or not.
No, no somos tan vagos / No, we are not that lazy
Ya se sabe el estereotipo europeo en el que se nos enmarca como vaguetes y tal, tanto a nosotros como a nuestros primos italianos... pues no! Resulta que no somos tan vagos... la verdad es que la mayoría de los españoles que yo he conocido aquí son pues com es de esperar... trabajadores y muy trabajadores por norma general.
It is well known in Europe that we are marked as lazy as well as our Italian cousins but... that's not true! Apparently we are not that lazy... the truth is that the most of the Spaniards that I've met in Australia are really hard workers!
El plato típico no es la paella / Paella is not the most typical dish
Que sí, que la paella es lo más popular es cierto pero hey! El plato típico que no va a faltar en ninguna mesa española por el resto de los tiempos va a ser la tortilla de patatas!! Bueno, bonito y barato! La realidad en lo que viene siendo la preparación tardas aproximadamente lo mismo pero lo que está claro es que hacer una tortillaca de patatas siempre es mucho más barato!
Right, paella is the most popular dish you are right but hey! The most typical dish that you will find always in a Spaniard table is the Spanish omelette! Good, tasty and cheap! In fact you spend more or less the same time to cook it as the paella but what it is obvious is that the Spanish omelette always will be cheaper.
No comemos chorizo en todos los platos / We don't use chorizo in every dish
Puñetero chorizo! Claro que comemos chorizo y claro que nos gusta pero es que aquí cualquier comida que se considere española se le mete el dichoso chorizo! Pero hasta el punto que he llegado a servir paellas de marisco con su chorizo claro! Porque es lo que le pega! Unos mejillones y un poquito de chorizo, perfecto!

No bebemos sangría a todas horas / We don't drink Sangria all the time
A pesar de que la sangría es probablemente la bebida más famosa en nuestro país pues no, no bebemos siempre sangria, más bien la bebemos en ocasiones especiales y en grandes cenas pero por norma general somos más cerveceros!
Despite sangria is probably the most famous drink in our country... no! We don't drink sangria everyday, not even every weekend! We are used to have in special occasions or big dinners with friends but in general we are more a kind of a beer drinkers.
La vestimenta / Clothing
También es cierto que los trajes de sevillana son algo typical typical pues no, no los usamos a menudo, sólo se utilizan en fiestas y ciertas celebraciones que dan pie a ello!

No todos tocamos la guitarra y cantamos como los Gypsy Kings / Not everyone can play the guitar and sing as the Gypsy Kings
No, aunque yo, por ejemplo, esté intentando tocar la guitarrilla y digo intentando porque aún estoy en ello... pues no todo el mundo toca la guitarra y sabe cantar flamenco y dar palmas, si bien nos podemos defender dando palmas por el resto... nanai.
Además los Gypsy Kings es un grupo francés de origen español y aunque son muy muy famosos no representan del todo la música flamenca ya que se mezcla un poquete con la rumba catalana.
Of course not! Even if I'm trying to play the guitar and I'm saying trying because I'm on it yet and improving slowly... not everyone can play the guitar, sing and clap as a flamenco artist! Maybe we can defend ourselves claping but for the rest... no way.
I'll tell you more... the Gypsy Kings is a french band with a Spanish origin and despite they are really really famous they don't represent at all Flamenco because they have a mix with the Catalan Rumba Style.
No todos veneramos los toros por encima de todo / Not everyone loves bullfighting
Por supuesto que no! Es más yo no sé como estará el porcentaje pero yo diría que la diferencia ya es muy holgada y que los que detestamos la tauromaquia predominamos en el conjunto del país. Es una tradición que se mantiene porque turísticamente atrae pero es algo que bajo mi humilde opinión va a tender a desaparecer.
Por ejemplo, en Cataluña, una de las regiones de España que ya muchos conocéis, los toros están prohibidos, bien por nosotros!
Of course we don't! Furthermore I don't know exactly what are the precentages but I would say that the difference now is substantial and the ones who hate the bullfighting predominate over the rest. It is still alive because it is a tradition and attracts tourism but in my opinion is going to disappear soon.
For example, in Catalonia, one of the regions in Spain that lots of you already know, bullfighting is forbidden, good on us!
La fiesta (ahí sí ves...) / The party (yeah... you got me)
Sí, somos fiesteros y eso es cierto y no hay discusión alguna! Lo que también tengo que decir que ya comenté en uno de los posts anteriores es que nuestras fiestas a mi parecer son mejores... Somos más alegres, más divertidos y no tenemos complejos podemos hacer el payaso todo lo que queramos y cualquiera es bienvenido a nuestras fiestas!
Aquí las fiestas australianas son parecidas lo que pasa es que por norma general se ponen muy muy finos, a veces demasiado y se van de madre... (Que no siempre es malo)
Y también por aquí como ya he comentado alguna vez pues hay mucho colombiano y sus fiestas también son buenas pero para poder estar en la onda tienes que saber bailar salsa y tal... lo que no es mi caso....
También deciros que bueno........ he ido a un festival de música sólo, el llamado Stereosonic de música electrónica.... y bueno ya sabéis que a mi ese estilo no me va mucho... así que.. aún tengo en mi memoria el último viña y la verdad es que se le echa de menos! Pronto voy para el Soundwave (rock, metal, heavy metal... pinta bien)

Yes, we are party people and that's a glaring truth and there aren't any discussions! But what I have to say is also, and I think I talked about that in previous posts, that our parties are awesome! We are funnier, happier and we don't hesitate to do the stupid as much as we can and everyone is welcome to our parties!
Here with the Australian parties that are similar to ours what happen is that in general everyone gets very very drunk and sometimes too much and everything can go out of control.... (What not always is a bad thing)
As I said many times there are a lot of Colombians also here and their parties are also good but to be cool there you need to dance Salsa or any of the other thousand variations what is not my case...
Also comment that well... I've just been in one music festival so far the one called Stereosonic with electronic music which is not my cup of tee... and well I'm still missing one great festival called Viña Rock back in Spain... Soon I'm going to Soundwave (rock, metal, heavy metal... it looks nice)

La comida mejicana es picante! Si bien alguno de nuestros platos podría ser picante... por norma general nuestra comida no pica na de na!
The Mexican food is spicy! Although some of our dishes could be spicy... in general our food is thankfully spicy free.
Siesta time...
Aquí se saben muy bien el termino siesta! Y cierto es existe la siesta pero es más común en el sur de España y es más típico en el verano que es cuando hace mucho calor y da mucho el sol y no se puede estar por la calle. En Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao o otras ciudad es raro encontrar gente haciendo la siesta.
Here the word siesta is well known! And it is truth that it exists but it is common in the south of Spain and during the summer when it is really hot outside and the Sun is insufferable! In Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao or other cities is weird to find people taking a Siesta.
